\u201cBetween The Shadow And The Soul\u201d is your new album and it has been released few weeks ago. I want to come from the past to the present towards this album and firstly I see that you met violin at very early ages. How did this friendship start, how was your first meeting? And your first sensation?<\/h5>\n

Annem durmaks\u0131z\u0131n keman \u00e7alard\u0131, dolay\u0131s\u0131yla kemanla ili\u015fkim daha ben do\u011fmadan ba\u015flad\u0131. Annem bana hamileyken amat\u00f6r orkestralarda \u00e7al\u0131p babam\u0131n da bulundu\u011fu bir grupla k\u00fc\u00e7\u00fck konserler veriyordu. Keman \u00e7almaya yedi ya\u015f\u0131nda ba\u015flad\u0131m, \u00e7al\u0131\u015fman\u0131n \u00f6nemini ve gereklili\u011fini tam olarak kavray\u0131ncaya dek annem \u00e7almama izin vermedi. Her g\u00fcn biraz olsun \u00e7al\u0131\u015faca\u011f\u0131ma dair onunla bir anla\u015fma yapmak zorunda kald\u0131m. \u0130lk keman hocam annemdi fakat bu durum uzun s\u00fcrmedi. \u00c7ok kavga ediyorduk! Baz\u0131 \u015feyleri \u00e7ok iyi hat\u0131rl\u0131yorum. Mesela ‘vibrato’ \u00e7almay\u0131 ba\u015fard\u0131\u011f\u0131m zaman ya da k\u0131rm\u0131z\u0131 renkli yeni ayakkab\u0131lar\u0131m\u0131 giyip \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131\u011f\u0131m sahnede ayakta alk\u0131\u015fland\u0131\u011f\u0131m ilk performans\u0131m gibi \u015feyleri \u00e7ok iyi hat\u0131rl\u0131yorum. Keman benim i\u00e7in her zaman duygular\u0131m\u0131 ifade etmenin bir yolu oldu. Hislerimi d\u0131\u015fa vurman\u0131n bir \u015fekli.<\/p>\n

My mother has always played the violin and so I began my relationship from before I was born \u2013 while she was pregnant with me she was playing in amateur orchestras and doing small gigs in a band with my father. I started playing when i was 7, my other didn\u2019t allow me to play until i appreciated and resepcted the need for practice \u2013 I had to make a deal with her that i would practice a bit every day. She was my first teacher but that didn\u2019t last long \u2013 we had too many arguments! I have a few early memories of playing which are very vivid \u2013 the moment I mastered \u2018vibrato\u2019, and my first performance where I wore my new red shoes and got a standing ovation. The violin was always an emotional outlet for me \u2013 something to release my feelings.<\/p>\n

After that what kind of an education process followed this friendship? It was certain that you would continue to journey with music. How were those first professional steps taken? Who were your first supporters during this journey?<\/h5>\n

Profesyonel olarak keman \u00e7almay\u0131 yani bunu meslek olarak yapmay\u0131 hi\u00e7bir zaman istemedim. Ailem de ben de g\u00fcnde sekiz saat \u00e7al\u0131\u015fan bir \u00e7ocuk olmam i\u00e7in yeteri kadar rekabet\u00e7i ve disiplinli de\u011fildik. Kemanla olan ili\u015fkim bu t\u00fcrden de\u011fildi. Keman \u00e7almak benim i\u00e7in keyif almak i\u00e7in ilgilendi\u011fim ders d\u0131\u015f\u0131 bir hobiydi. Okulda ald\u0131\u011f\u0131m m\u00fczik bursu bile kariyere at\u0131lan ilk ad\u0131mdan ziyade okul taksitlerini \u00f6deyebilmek a\u00e7\u0131s\u0131ndan \u00f6nemliydi benim i\u00e7in. Politikac\u0131 olmak istiyordum, e\u011fitimimi London School of Economics’de tamamlad\u0131m. Bo\u015f zamanlar\u0131mda m\u00fczik yap\u0131yor, gruplarla \u00e7al\u0131yor ve bir g\u00f6steri merkezinde ev sahipli\u011fi\/sunuculuk yap\u0131yordum. Hepsi keyif almak i\u00e7indi. Para almadan gruplar i\u00e7in kay\u0131tlara girmeye ba\u015flad\u0131m ve olabildi\u011fince farkl\u0131 ki\u015filerle \u00e7ald\u0131m. Daha sonra 22 ya\u015f\u0131nda, \u00fcniversiteden hen\u00fcz ayr\u0131lm\u0131\u015fken Trans Siberian Orkestras\u0131 ile bir turneye \u00e7\u0131kt\u0131m. Turne sayesinde tam zamanl\u0131 bir m\u00fczisyen oldum ve ofiste \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma zorunlulu\u011fundan tamamen kurtuldum. Ailem ve e\u015fim o zamanlar\u0131mda hep destek oldular. Bu durumun elbette \u00e7ok faydas\u0131 var ancak bir\u00e7ok \u015fey yine sizde bitiyor. Ne kadar h\u0131rsl\u0131s\u0131n\u0131z? Ne kadar isteklisiniz? Bu i\u015f i\u00e7in ne kadar \u00e7al\u0131\u015f\u0131yorsunuz? En nihayetinde seyahat eden bir m\u00fczisyen olmak sizi yaln\u0131zl\u0131\u011fa hapsediyor. Y\u0131l\u0131n sekiz ay\u0131n\u0131 seyahat ile ge\u00e7iriyordum dostlar\u0131mdan ve ailemden uzak kalarak. Alt\u0131 y\u0131l boyunca Noel’i evimden uzakta ge\u00e7irdim. Ancak hi\u00e7birinden \u00f6t\u00fcr\u00fc pi\u015fmanl\u0131k duymuyorum. Bu inan\u0131lmaz bir deneyim ancak bir hayat bi\u00e7imi olarak kendinizi bu i\u015fe adad\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131z zaman olduk\u00e7a zor gelebiliyor.<\/p>\n

I never wanted to play violin professionally. Neither my parents or I were competitive, disciplined or motivated enough for me to be a child who practised 8 hours a day. This was not my relationship with the violin. It was always an extra curricular hobby that i did for enjoyment. Even when I got music scholarship to my school, it was about helping to pay with my school fees rather than the first step towards a career. I wanted to be a politican and studied at the London School of Economics. I did music in my spare time, playing with bands and hosting at a music venue. It was always something for enjoyment. I started recording for bands for free and played with as many different people as possible. Then when i was 22 and had just left university I got a tour with the Trans Siberian Orchestra \u2013 this tour enabled me to be a full time musician and I never had to work in an office again! My parents and my partner at the time were all supportive which helps \u2013 but really it comes down to you as a person \u2013 how much drive and ambition you have, and how much hard work you are willing to put into it. Ultimately, being a touring musician can be quite lonely \u2013 i was spending up to 8 months of the year traveling – away from friends and family, and for 6 years running I spent Christmas away. I don\u2019t regret any of it \u2013 it is an incredible experience, but it can be tough if you commit to this being your life.<\/p>\n
